Deeply Rooted Through the Storms of Life
Important: I’ve added some inner healing prompts throughout this blog to help you connect with Jesus and get the most out of the message. Grab your Bible and something to write with as you dive in and reflect on how God is speaking to you through this. You can go through these all at once or work through one per day.
Driving through an unexpected storm with my husband recently brought me face to face with how quickly adversity can strike. We were on our way back from Colorado when dark clouds gathered, rain poured down, and the strongest winds we’ve experienced in a long time whipped against our car. As I clung to my seat, praying, I wondered if we should pull over until it passed. My husband, seeing a break in the storm clouds ahead, kept pushing forward to get through to the other side. That storm reminded me of the trials so many of us are facing right now—whether it’s financial stress, health issues, or broken relationships.
Like that storm, adversity can feel overwhelming, threatening to knock us off course. But just as we trusted God’s guidance through the storm on the road, we are called to trust Him in life’s storms. Grab your bible and read 2 Chronicles 20:1-30. This is such a powerful story!!
Now that you read these verses let's talk about what we can learn from King Jehoshaphat. These enemy nations were intent on destroying Judah. Have you felt that the enemy is trying to take you out? Possibly a friend or loved one? Instead of responding with fear, Jehoshaphat sought God with faith and dependence. His story gives us powerful lessons on how to face adversity and trust God for victory. Let’s take a look at these keys to overcoming life’s storms, and how they can help us stand firm in faith.
1. Seek God First
Jehoshaphat’s first response to danger was to “inquire of the Lord” (2 Chronicles 20:3). He didn’t turn to his friends, army or advisors—he turned to God. When adversity strikes, our first response should be to seek God. Jesus modeled this in His life, always going to the Father in prayer. In times of trial, lean into God’s presence and ask Him for wisdom and guidance.
Inner Healing Prompt: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of your life where you’ve been relying on your own strength rather than seeking Him first. What is He inviting you to surrender? Write down His response.
2. Acknowledge Your Need for God
Jehoshaphat admitted, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (v. 12). He humbly acknowledged that only God could deliver them. Adversity is often an invitation to lay down self-reliance and lean more fully on God.
Inner Healing Prompt: Reflect on areas where you feel overwhelmed or out of control. Pray, “Lord, I don’t know what to do, but I place my trust in You.” Let Him guide you into deeper dependence on His strength.
3. Call on Others for Support
Jehoshaphat didn’t face the battle alone—he gathered all of Judah to seek God together (v. 4). When we’re in the midst of a storm, we need the support and prayers of others. God designed us to walk through life in healthy, Jesus-centered, community.
Inner Healing Prompt: Is there an area of your life where you’ve been isolated? Ask God to show you someone you can reach out to for prayer and encouragement. Write down how you can connect with them this week.
4. Remember God’s Faithfulness
As Jehoshaphat prayed, he reminded himself and the people of God’s past deliverances (v. 6-9). When we face the storms of life, reflecting on God’s past faithfulness strengthens our trust that He will come through again.
Inner Healing Prompt: Take a moment to recall times when God has been faithful in your life. Write down those moments and offer Him thanks for His provision and love.
5. Listen for God’s Voice
In the midst of their prayer, God spoke through a prophet, reassuring them that the battle belonged to Him (v. 15). In life’s storms, God is still speaking—through His Word, prayer, and others.
Inner Healing Prompt: Ask God to quiet the noise of fear or confusion in your heart. Take time to listen for His voice. What is He speaking to you about the challenges you are facing today? Ask the Holy Spirit what other scripture would be helpful for you to read today. Look it up and write it down.
6. Trust in God’s Battle Plan
God’s instructions to Judah were unconventional and bold: they were told to simply stand still and watch as He delivered them (v. 17). Instead of fighting or taking matters into their own hands, they were called to trust completely in God’s power. Trusting God's plan often means letting go of our need for control and stepping back, allowing Him to work in ways that may not always make sense to us. It’s a call to deeper surrender—believing that His ways are higher than ours and that His plan is perfect.
Inner Healing Prompt: Reflect on an area in your life where you've been striving in your own strength. Ask God to help you release that situation into His hands, trusting His perfect timing and plan. Also, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if there are any steps of obedience God has already spoken to you about that you have yet to follow. Let Him guide you into full trust and obedience.
7. Praise Before the Victory
Before the battle even began, Jehoshaphat appointed singers to lead with praise, declaring God’s goodness and faithfulness (v. 21). This powerful act of faith shifted the atmosphere, changed mindsets, and invited God’s presence into their situation. When we praise Jesus, even before we see the outcome, we are proclaiming that He is greater than any challenge we face. Praise takes our focus off the problem and places it on Jesus, the One who holds the ultimate victory.
Inner Healing Prompt: Put on your favorite worship song or hymn and simply take time to praise Jesus, even if your circumstances haven’t changed yet. Reflect on His faithfulness and thank Him for who He is. As you worship what comes to mind about Jesus, Father God, and Holy Spirit. Write out your thoughts and any scripture that comes to mind. Pay attention to how you feel as you worship Him.
8. Rest in the Peace of Jesus
As Judah lifted their praise, God stepped in and fought the battle on their behalf (v. 22). When we place our trust in Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we can rest, knowing that He is fighting for us. True peace isn’t found in the absence of challenges, but in the presence of Jesus. When we connect deeply with Him, we are connecting to the One who calms every storm and offers us unshakable peace, no matter the circumstances.
Inner Healing Prompt: Pray, "Jesus, I surrender this battle to You. Help me to rest in Your peace, knowing You are in control." Write down specific ways you can intentionally embrace His peace in the coming days, allowing Him to guide you and quiet your heart in His presence.
The storms of life can often feel overwhelming, but as we've seen in the story of King Jehoshaphat, victory comes when we trust God, seek Him first, and rely on His perfect plan. Through praise, prayer, and surrender, we can experience the peace that only Jesus, the Prince of Peace, can give us in the midst of our battles. Remember, you don’t have to walk through adversity alone—God is always with you, and so is His body, the church.
